Commonwealth Law Students’ Essay Competition 2018

This was the 7th Commonwealth Law Student Essay Competition. The competition was open to all students registered in an undergraduate law degree course within a Higher Education Institution in a Commonwealth Nations.

The title for the Essay Competition, 2018 for was:

In The Context Of The Commonwealth Principles, How Can The Law Achieve A Balance Between The Freedom Of The Media To Report And Criticise The Government And/Or Judiciary, And The Need For Respect, Responsibility And Regulation In Reporting?

The theme was drawn from the work undertaken by the Commonwealth Working Group on Media Governance on freedom of expression and the role of media in good governance.

Essay Winners

Cash prizes were awarded to the winners of first, second and third places as follows:

  • 1st Prize: £150;
  • 2nd Prize: £75;
  • 3rd Prize: £50

The winning entry was also be published in the Newsletter of the Commonwealth Legal Education and in the Journal of Commonwealth Law and Legal Education.

The winners were as follows:

  • First place: Alvin Cheung Yui Yin, University College, Oxford, U.K.
  • Second place: Poppy Elizabeth Watson, Birmingham Law School, University of Birmingham, U.K.
  • Third place: Abhishek Chauhan, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala, India.
